Volvo Plans to Have Autonomous Car by 2021

You’ll be able drive along the highway without touching the steering wheel or the gas pedal within the next five years, promises Volvo. That’s according to a new report from Bloomberg.

“It’s our ambition to have a car that can drive fully autonomously on the highway by 2021,” said Hakan Samuelsson, Volvo CEO, in an interview, adding, though, that legislation has to keep up with the technology.

Volvo says that it will start testing vehicles with self-driving features next year, eventually putting about  100 of the cars onto public roads in Sweden, England, and China as a first step towards mass market sales.

The push for self-driving cars is part of Volvo’s pledge not to have anyone die or be seriously injured in one of their cars by 2020. Self driving technology, they claim, dramatically reduces the risk of driving a car.
